Search has evolved. Now, gaining organic traffic is no longer only about blue links and 10 results per page. And while SEO is still a vital component of any marketing strategy, we now also need to consider conversations in ChatGPT, summaries in Google’s AI Overviews, and answers in Perplexity, to name a few.

For content teams that has meant a new challenge, but also a new opportunity.

We’re excited to announce the first step in Frase’s evolution from SEO expert to a dual engine for SEO + GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). The same Frase expertise on SEO now covers GEO as well.

What is GEO?

GEO is the practice of optimizing your content not just to rank on Google, but to get cited by generative engines—AI systems like Google’s SGE, ChatGPT, and others that pull from live web content to construct their answers.

Where SEO is about search engines ranking your content highly, GEO is about generative engines referencing you regularly as an authoritative source. And in a comprehensive search strategy, you most likely want to cover both for optimum visibility and organic search traffic.

Introducing GEO Scoring in Frase

We’re kicking things off with a new feature that’s live in your Frase editor starting today: GEO scoring.

You’ll now see a combined SEO + GEO score in your Optimization tab, plus the ability to drill into each individually.

Here’s how it works:

GEO Score = Authority + Readability + Structure

We assess your content on three key pillars of AI citation-readiness:

  • Authority – Does your content link out to credible sources? Are you backing up claims with citations?
    Frase will suggest where to add references to boost trust.
  • Readability – Is your content easy to understand at a wide reading level?
    Frase flags high-grade reading levels and offers suggestions to simplify them.
  • Structure Are your passages clear, scannable, and well-formatted for extraction?
    Think: clean headings, snippet-ready formatting, and standalone value.

Then, Frase will provide recommendations to better optimize your content to address all three points. Make the changes and then refresh to see your new and improved score.
